Auditing

Auditing

Aviation auditing is a vital aspect of airworthiness compliance. Audits are typically performed by professional, independent (could be the same company) auditors trained in aviation standards such as ARP4754A, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-200B, DO-278A, DO-326A, etc. Aviation auditors are often part of the Quality Assurance (also termed Process Assurance in the case of hardware and systems) team. Aviation auditors typically are trained in and follow a Quality Management System (QMS) which often complies with ISO 9001, AS9115, CMMI, IEEE, or similar safety-critical framework.

During aircraft and avionics system development, auditors are required to approve the aviation development plans and standards; this ensures such have been independently evaluated and approved, while simultaneously ensuring the auditors are intimately familiar with the processes and artifacts they are auditing. Independent audit personnel will often initiate an audit by first performing a high-level ARP4754A Gap Analysis, DO178C Gap Analysis, DO-326A Gap Analysis, or DO-254 Gap Analysis as depicted in the figure below:

This Gap Analysis will also likely identify the best development and verification tools to be used in filling the gaps. Gap Analysis services for DO-178C Gap Analysis, DO-254 Gap Analysis, and ARP4754A Gap Analysis are available Here:

Aviation audits typically consist of five essential elements as depicted in the figure below:

Audits typically make use of ARP4754A Checklists, DO-178C Checklists, DO-326A Checklists, and DO-254 Checklists. Sample checklists are available by Clicking Here.
